A Discovery Rooted in the Wild

Assam tea story differs from any other globally. Assam forests were sites of wild tea's old growth long before tea attained its current status as a global staple. Though untapped worldwide, native people chewed tea leaves for energy.

It was during the early 19th century that this treasure gained the spotlight is rightfully deserved. In 1823, Robert Bruce, a Scottish adventurer, came across some native tea plants. His brother, Charles Alexander Bruce, went on to cultivate these plants in a scientific manner. He concocted the strain—Camellia sinensis var. assamica—that was distinctly different from the Chinese variety that the British knew at that time.

Brewing a Colonial Legacy

Once the potential of Assam’s tea was realized, cultivation on a large scale proved ideal for the terrain and for its climate—hot, humid, and fertile. East India Company, by the 1830s, shifted focus to the development of tea estates in Assam, instead of importing Chinese tea. Assam tea history reached an important moment then, and the region became one of the largest tea producers globally.

However, the history is not confined solely to plantations and exports. It is also a tale of tough labour and undying resilience. Workers brought in from tribal areas across India, toiled in the estates under harsh conditions. Their descendants carried forward the skills and also stories that got passed down through generations.
